Very handy, lightweight and performs great!
This scanner was easy to set up, it's easy to use and to store. It's replacing an older Brother scanner that I've had and used daily for over 10 years. I was so pleased with that one that I wanted to stay with the same brand. It was a great decision!

Scanning on the go!
Wow! I am impressed... as shown in my pictures, it came well protected and in perfect conditions. The right side seemed to be detachable but normal for this model. After reading the instructions probably this case design is also used for other portable models from Brother where you can change the battery. This model doesn't have a battery. I also bought the Hermitshell Travel Case and fits perfectly! Please, install the Brother software and drivers for this unit. And yes, even if you already have a laser printer from Brother. By installing the software you will be able to configure the connection settings for this scanner and once done, from the same Brother app you will be able to choose from this device or others. In my case now I can choose between this (USB) and my laser printer (wireless) for scanning purposes. I even tested the scanner connecting it to my BASEUS 7 in 1 port and worked perfectly. Is duplex and all documents scanned perfectly. Great product ????.

Does double sided copies one pass through
Love this scanner. It is portable and compact. I do a lot of one page scanning, but I have both side of my page I need scanned at the same time. This Scanner completes the double sided scan with one pass through. You do not need to flip the page an reinsert for a second pass. This will save me a lot of time!! Super happy so far.

Excellent scanner, portable and easy to use.
I really liked this scanner but I returned it to get the 940 . I needed the micro SD card feature that the 940 has because I work for the government and they do not allow hooking up hardware and software to their network. The advertisement on other websites made it seem like this one had the SD card feature but when it arrived I found out that the 740 did not have the card feature. This scanner is very portable and easy to use. It scans really fast and the scans are clear. It cannot scan from a book, the item you are scanning has to pass through the scanner, not unless you rip out the page from a book. This scanner is well worth the money but do not forget to buy a hard case to protect your scanner.

Works with Linux (Fedora)
This is a nice little duplex scanner. I bought the factory refurbished model, and for a quick minute I thought that might have been a mistake. After every page, the scanner took 20+ seconds to be ready again. I'm using Linux (Fedora), so I thought maybe it was a driver problem. Or maybe I got a dud unit. I watched the udev monitor and realized the scanner seemed to be power-cycling after each page. Odd.

Turns out, it was the port on my laptop. I plugged it into a different USB port ON THE SAME LAPTOP and the scanner works great! No long delay between scanning subsequent pages. No strange udev messages.

Linux folks, Brother has Linux drives on their product support website (*.deb and *.rpm). Install is simple. I used Gnome's "Document Scanner" at first as the scanning front end. You have to select "All Pages From Feeder" (not "Single Page") in order for the two-sided (duplex) functionality of the 740D to work. You MUST ALSO select "Both" from the preferences dialogue.

I eventually switched to "gscan2pdf", which is more flexible in terms of scan post-processing. In the "Scan" dialogue on the "Scan Options" tab, the "Scan Source" option allows you to perform two-sided (duplex) scanning. Select the option ending with "left aligned" for single-sided and "left aligned - duplex" for two-sided.

 A little MIRACLE
Ok, lets get this part out of the way... Was the downloaded software placed or arranged how I would have done it? NO.
Do I think it would have been better to do it my way? Yes.

This little guy is about the size of a box of tinfoil. Even the most cluttered desk has room for this, tiny footprint.

Once downloaded the software is REALLY simple to use. Just place the sheet to be scanned next to the entrance and you will feel a little "bite." Click scan on your computer screen, done! The paper feeds fast and both sides are scanned. I do recommend the 740D model for this feature. Such a time saver.

As a teacher I chop up textbooks, scan them, and then I can use the pictures, maps, and charts in PowerPoint/Keynote presentations. Or just show them on the classroom screen. (better than just using a document camera)

Using my old flatbed scanner it would take hours (days?) to do this. This little miracle let me scan a 500-page textbook in part of an afternoon. Easy, fast and dare I say? Fun!?

I was very impressed with the ease and speed.
