Epson ES-50 Portable Scanner
I have scanned almost 2000 photos so far and have at least that to go.
All things considered, I could not ask for a better scanner. It was inexpensive, portable, plenty fast and just works. Note: outside of scanning the text on the back of pictures and stitching it to the front, I have not done any text scanning. The stitching option is wonderful.
The only 3 issues that I have (I tried to explain my work arounds) and I consider them minor are :
1. You sometimes have to reorient dark photos or use a light background slightly larger than the photo or the scanner will crop out the dark parts. This is understandable since the rollers are black.
2. Very thin high gloss photos have to have constant pressure in and out (manual by pushing and pulling the photo) or the rollers will slip on the picture. Thicker, high gloss photos don't do this.
3. The app needs some work as it appears to be outdated. Won't do some of the features on larger files as it will crash and close. Work around save the file as is and do what you need to do thru a Microsoft or whatever photo editing app. This only happens on really large pictures.
I did not have any problems with gray scale or color scanning at the max 1200BPI (once I figured out the app).
Very handy and efficient
I would say I have one of the smallest work spaces in my office, and this allows me to do my job quickly, and allows me to reserve as much desk space as possible. Also convenient not having to get up to go to the printer! We’ve purchased them for every desk space now!
Pretty impressive scanner
I received this scanner a few days ago so I cannot speak to its long-term performance or durability, but so far it works GREAT. The software was a little difficult to install & setup. The software is abit clunky to use. But the software & scanner are more reliable than my MUCH more expensive desktop scanner. And I can use this scanner in my lap as I scan! It scans color documents. It does not do 2-sided scanning directly, but if you scan side 1, then turn the document over & insert the reverse side into the scanner & click “+scan” it will scan the reverse side. When saved to a computer the results are the same as those from a 2-sided scanner. The same button can be used to add multiple pages to a scan. All in all a pretty impressive scanner.
Small footprint and easily operated
This Epson portable page scanner measures about 11" wide by 2" deep. You use the provided cable to connect the scanner (micro USB port) to a computer (USB). Then you slip the page as far as it will go and listen for a micro advancement that indicates it is ready to go. Push the button at the top-right, and page advances and is scanned. Epson software gives you output options, such as saving to PDF. Maximum scanning width is 8.5". Just be sure to align the page to be scanned with the left-hand inside edge. No complaints. You may have to nudge the bottom edge of the page. That's it!
Does a great job for what it is.
Like others, I found a mountain of photos after my mother died. Many old family pictures that I couldn't just discard but took up a lot of room. I bought this to scan and save those photos to a smaller package. Works well for the purpose.
For color photos this unit is great. It's fast, easy to use, portable. Software has very basic controls for adjusting image quality.
One big caveat, it does NOT work on old, glossy, black and white photos. Hard to explain the effect but the image itself is only black and white with no grayscale so everything is washed out. Having to use an old, slow, flatbed scanner for these.
Overall I'm happy with my purchase. Pretty good value for what it offers.
